In the 17th Century, large scale Chinese immigration began to the
island of Taiwan. From 1620 to 1662 the Dutch controlled Taiwan
and from 1895 to 1945 the island was controlled by Japan. In
1949, during the Chinese communist revolution, over two million
nationalist supporters fled to the island. Both Taipei and
Peking consider Taiwan to be an integral part of China. Taiwan
has rejected several offers from Peking for reunification. On
December 17, 1978, the United States recognized The Peoples
Republic of China (Mainland) and severed ties with Taiwan. Land
reform, government planning, foreign aid and investment have
brought huge advances in industry, agriculture and living
standards. @
